Food security

Food security is a fundamental humanitarian and development priority that aims to ensure all people have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food at all times for an active and healthy life. Conflict, displacement, climate change, economic instability, and natural disasters continue to undermine food systems and livelihoods, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations.
Food security interventions address immediate food needs while promoting long-term resilience through sustainable agriculture, livestock support, livelihood development, and improved market access. These efforts strengthen household food production, diversify income sources, and enhance communities’ capacity to withstand future shocks.
A comprehensive food security approach also promotes climate-smart agricultural practices, natural resource management, disaster risk reduction, and nutrition-sensitive activities to improve food availability, dietary diversity, and overall well-being. Cross-cutting principles, including gender equality, protection, disability inclusion, environmental sustainability, accountability to affected populations, and community participation, are integrated throughout all interventions.
By combining humanitarian assistance with sustainable development approaches, food security initiatives contribute to protecting livelihoods, reducing vulnerability, strengthening resilience, and enabling communities to achieve greater self-reliance and long-term food security.
